Oczy nie mogą znaleźć głowy do zamieszkania... / Eyes can't find a head to inhabit...

Nikita Kadan, Gabinet zabiegowy, 2009-2010

M.M.

The current exhibitionat MS2 is a mixture of innovations – a vast majority is constituted by works from the second half of 20 c., some come from the new millennium. Most of their authors are Poland's neighbours – they come from Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, Slovakia. There are a few Poles two – the Kobro-Strzemiński couple, amongst others, and even some Americans. Eyes... were to be a remarkable opportunity to see what the 'avant-garde' actually is. The term 'avant-garde' could possibly be applied to the exhibition. It's got it all: the breach of barriers, futurist ideas, the desire to escape the obvious forms. Yet, to be honest, I had expected something more surprising, shocking at times and, above all, something more inspiring. I suppose the works themselves are not answerable for the “lack” that I felt. Had they been divided into some thematic groups (e.g. the cosmos, society, authority, space, sexuality...), just as it has been arranged in the permanent exhibition in MS2, perhaps it could have made it easier for the viewers to grasp the ideas conveyed by each artist. Without that, we are left with the above-mentioned mixture (or an insipid cocktail). It may point to the breadth and ambiguity of the 'avant-garde' in art, but still it makes any interpretation dim and complicated, at least for a layman like me.

That doesn't mean that I do not recommend the exhibition. Though I did not come to any general conslusions, I am not trying to belittle the value of the works. I took my time with the “urban” fabrics by Celms, El Lissitzky's “soviet” models and the “sadistic” plates by Kadan. I guess I was allured by the way they tackled the subject of authority as an oppressive power. I am curious about your response to the show. I don't feel that it is absolutely necessary to pay a visit to MS2. Nonetheless, Orozco's photography leaves the long-lasting impression of the tenderness and elusiveness of beauty, and the self-destruction by Metzger is truly moving. I am quite surprised to see that the Eyes..., though widely advertised and reasonably described in a catalogue, have not found many eyes to inhabit as yet.

I would not, however, recommend visiting the State Archive, where (allegedly!) the other part of the exhibition is staged. I am certain you would be disappointed – the exhibits are scarce, plus they are squeezed into tight corners of the city hall. The whole idea of putting works on display in that building seems to have been desperate and simply abortive. I had to be guided to each exhibit and their allocation was chaotic, if not preposterous (e.g. under the city hall noticeboard, on a window – with the sun in my eyes, above the stairs where I could see nothing...) Instead, you could go to check what's up in MS in Więckowskiego St., because I cannot imagine anything less impressive than what I saw in the archive. Besides, I am curious when they are going to finish the renovation works in the good old MS...
