(NOT) FOR YOU

W ostatnie dni stycznia dwa razy odwiedziłam MS2 w Manufakturze.

Sądzę, że łódzka kolekcja sztuki współczesnej to coś, czego inne miasta mogą nam zazdrościć, a samo muzeum to jedno z moich ulubionych miejsc w Łodzi.

M.M.

In the last days of January I paid two visits to the MS2 Museum in Manufaktura. I wanted to find out what the “FOR YOU” exhibition was in the first place. At the beginning I thought those were artworks supposed to complement the permanent exposition of the Łódź's MS. It turned out that I was only partially correct: indeed, those new acquisitions constitute an extension to the Collection of the 20th and 21st century Art. However, “FOR YOU” is also a temporary exhibition shown on the ground floor of the Museum until April 22. The press release reads that “FOR YOU” contains “works that confront the experiences characterised by three words: clashes, reversals, hopes.” I believe the curatorial organisation was very good, though the works themselves are not astonishing. None of them made any lasting impression on me, yet I admit that the triple division makes sense – there were actively political, derisive and belligerent works in the collection. There was also a great variety of media: film, painting, photography, a mobile installation. Among the artists there were predominantly European names, a few Poles too, moreover the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Warsaw is the partner of the show. The above-mentioned variety therefore originates in similar cultural backgrounds. The exhibition as a whole may not be earth-shattering but I think it may be an intriguing “political” addition to the permanent collection.

As regards the permanent collection – it was “FOR YOU” that encouraged me to see its new arrangement – on the three upper floors of MS2. To be honest, I could wander around there for hours – I took me two days to see everything, even though it was not my first time in the museum. I could not tell which of the works were new because after the refurbishment the whole exposition is a whole new experience and it is really worthwhile to try it when shopping in Manufaktura. Beware – one hour is not enough!

Many Polish works are back, and now we can see all the phases of Strzemiński's artistic activity – his paintings have been given a huge space on the second floor. The works by Kobro and Hasior are exhibited again as well. I believe that Łódź's collection of modern art is something we should take pride in, and the Museum itself is one of my favourite places in the city. The shop on the ground floor is full of great books, albums and magazines, which you could not possibly find in Empik stores. Furthermore, there is the cosy café upstairs and the lovely staff - it is an oasis of peace in the invariably overcrowded Manufaktura. It is a pity that the halfway successful temporary exhibition is on until late April. Hopefully, MS2 will surprise us with something fresh then.
